Air Pollution and the Environment

Whether we want to admit or even think about it, air pollution is a real problem, one that continues to affect our environment and our lives each and every day. Although people who live in rural areas can easily forget that such a problem exists (as they do not see smog and factories on a daily basis) or remember its causes (fewer cars on the roads), air pollution is a very real issue that affects everybody. At times we simply can’t ignore air pollution. For example, when driving past a factory pumping smoke clouds high into the sky, or when standing in a traffic jam smelling the exhaust of the car in front of us, it is hard not to imagine what damage it is doing to our body.
What is air pollution?
Air pollution consists of various types of chemicals and gases being passed into our atmosphere. The main cause of this unwanted pollution is vehicles. Second to to that are industrial factories that release dirty and dangerous fumes into the atmosphere.
Why is air pollution dangerous?
- Health reasons: air pollution has been linked to numerous types of illnesses such as strokes, heart issues and breathing problems.
- Global warming: air pollution is responsible for global warming. This phenomena leads to the gradual but persistent increase of the temperature of our planet. It has already started affecting entire ecosystems, and unless it is stopped, it will melt the polar ice caps which will raise sea levels. This will cause flooding in coastal cities such as New York and London.
- Ozone layer: air pollution causes the ozone layer to shrink, thus, reducing its ability to shield us from ultraviolet radiation. This not only causes skin cancer, but also damages wildlife and plants.
- Acid rain: certain pollutants can cause rain to turn to acid rain. This has a great impact on animals, fish and plants that are soaked in it. Acid rain can also affect the ground, making the soil toxic to many animals and plants.
How can we fight air pollution?
- One way would be to use Hybrid vehicles. These vehicles produce about a fourth of the pollution of the average vehicle. Just imagine the global effects if everyone started driving such vehicles.
- Using green energy, such as wind power, solar power, hydro electricity, geothermal power and biomass energy, rather than using fossil fuels for energy, would also have a large impact on air pollution.
Since this problem seems to only get worse in time, and we may reach the point where we damage the environment irrevorcably, the only logical solution is that everybody embrace ways that reduce air pollution in the hope that it will eventually, some day, be eliminated. Perhaps the only way this can be achieved is through education: although most people are familiar with air pollution and how it occurs, and are generally aware of its effects, many would rather turn their heads the other way rather than deal with this ever growing problem. The only way to truly overcome this problem is to start with the young: if we, collectively, can get our descendants to permanently change their ways by learning from our mistakes, then perhaps there is still hope for our planet – and ourselves.

I have some models for Reuse and Recycling, some methods for Biogas, some designs for Solar and Wind Energy.
I need 2 millions US dollars for simulate and modeling my inventions.
Would you able to prepare them (or your Co. or your Gov.)?
Best regards Sadeghi

I can’t speak for my government, but I certainly don’t have $2M, unfortunately (or a 1/100th of that). Why not look for a venture capital and pitch your idea?

Or you could try dragons den. Well i think if africa worked together they would all be better off. What i mean is some countries in africa have all round sunsine but lack of water, why not have the country with sunshine build those power plants they are building in spain, i dont remember what they are called but i do know that they have many mirrors reflecting the sun light to the center point, which when this point heats up it creates cumbustion and then power ect.
So if this country with these power plants supplies clean power to the rest and trade for water ect you know what i mean. Sorry im not very good at putting things into words.
I think countries with sunshine could become the wholesaler of clean energy to europe. I dont know just an idea.

Great to see you making this and raising awareness on the subject. I hope that air pollution is minimized in the future just as the smog of the 40’s from the industrial revolution was as we modernized.

We are also active in the health industry. We live in the Netherlands and we have not much nature here. Everything is buil with companes and due to that will air pollution be a bigger problem.

I see you are interested in global warming and everything else that comes with it. I would just like to share my disappointment at the outcome of the Copenhagen climate council. The summit was supposed to halt temperature rise by cutting greenhouse gases. But after two weeks of negotiating it ended in a weak political accord that does not force any country to reduce emissions and has no legal standing anyway. As a result the world is “one step closer to a humanitarian crisis”, according to the Royal Society. It looks like it is every man for themselves but if your far away neighbors don’t do anything to halt it, what is the point. Here in Scotland, Scottish Hydro has shown the way forward with supplying clean renewable Scottish power from sources like, hydro damns and wind turbine farms but is it all in vein? It could well be.

I don’t think people will change their actions until it hurts them financially. Make it expensive to pollute, and pollution ends.

I just wish people would be more enthusiastic about alternative energy and the long-term benefits it offers. I live in a country with over 300 sunny days per year and it would be foolish not to harness that sun power, even if it`s for water heating only. Just start from somewhere.

great article highlighting the dangerous of air pollution, i live in a big city and sometimes i refuse to go walking just because of the pollution. I would prefer walk outside because of this im forced to go to a gym

great article. air pollution is horrible, it makes me glad i dont live in a big city!

I’m writing an article on cancer, which is what I was initially doing research for when I saw your blog post. There are so many health issues out there that people are struggling with, I had no idea! This is solid information, thanks.

I have been searching for a reliable bunch of videos to watch to build a small wind turbine, I am for sure that we would be able to decrease our electricity bill. I think alternate forms of energy is the way of the future.
